Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane’s address during the MGSLG Board Annual General Meeting

Gauteng Education MEC, Matome Chiloane, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to address the annual general meeting. He commended the school for its unwavering commitment to enhancing the capabilities of schools, teachers, SGBs, and RCLs.

Addressing Inequalities

MEC Chiloane acknowledged the challenges faced by South Africa, emphasising the need to address instability and unsustainable inequalities. Despite progress, disparities persist, highlighting the urgent need for intervention. He stressed the importance of inclusive, equitable, and lifelong learning opportunities outlined in the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 4.

Relevance in Education

MEC Chiloane urged the institution to remain relevant in evolving global education trends. He emphasised the need to align with South Africa’s realities and prospects, highlighting the urgency of repositioning the institution as a Higher Education Institute.

Preserving History and Heritage

In light of Heritage Month, MEC Chiloane underscored the significance of history and heritage in education. He warned against disregarding one’s history, which forms the foundation of identity and self-determination.

Embracing Technology

The MEC emphasised the province’s commitment to future-proofing education through digital technologies. He highlighted the critical role of coding and robotics, urging schools, teachers, and learners to integrate these technologies for a competitive edge.

Youth Development

MEC Chiloane shared Premier Panyaza Lesufi’s concern for the significant number of young people not in education, employment, or training. He introduced the Gauteng Future Leaders initiative, designed to address youth challenges in the province.

Collective Leadership

MEC Chiloane called for unity within the board, emphasizing its pivotal role in combating violence and suicides in schools. He announced the relaunch of the Parental Family Support program and requested a rollout plan from the board.

Regarding imminent board vacancies, MEC Chiloane assured that decisions will be made and communicated promptly.
